Having a test

Having a test simply informs what your status is at that time.

If you are sexually active, depending on the type of sex you have, you may want to test at least once a year. If unsure, talk to the nurse/clinician at your test.

There are different types of HIV tests available, some sexual health clinics may offer more than one type, but not all offer all types. But the only way to find out your status is by having the test.

Before being tested, you will be asked some questions, this is simply to enable the nurse/clinician to better understand your situation and your potential level of risk. Remember, all the information discussed is strictly confidential.

For full details as to the various test types, visit: www.avert.org/testing.htm

The Positive East test clinics in Tower Hamlets, Newham and Hackney use the Rapid Test method. This provides the results within minutes and uses a blood sample from a finger-prick test. The Tower Hamlets Saturday session and the Newham sessions are undertaken is peer-led; while the Tower Hamlets Tuesday session and Hackney sessions is nurse-led.

In an emergency, visit your local A&E, for your closest hospital visit: www.nhs.uk or www.fpa.org.uk.
